building myself a new shed at the bottom of the garden to replace the one inherited with the house which has rotted. I have dug holes 18"x18" wide after about 2 foot down the soil turns to clay. I am now down to 3 foot. my intention is to concrete 6" wooden posts in as foundation posts to build on my question is clay is it good or bad for foundations. cheers

Clay is lousy for foundations due to the fact that changes in water content levels severely affect the volume of the clay.

So when it dries out the clay shrinks and when it is wet the clay swells.

Fortunately you are building a shed on stilts so that isn't really going to be a problem for a wooden structure, i.e. being allowed to flex etc.

I presume it will be wooden being built off 6" timber posts?

you guess correct it will be timber framed I thought it would not be a problem going that way thanks for the assurance
