I have inherited a large wool rug and have put it down over the weekend. I am now aware that it smells and it is making the room smell. How can I best get rid of this? Is a carpet cleaner the best way or are there other ways of getting rid of the odour? I would prefer to try a method other than a cleaning machine first as it is a large rug and I had to virtually clear the room of furniture before laying it.

Before you rent a machine or call pros, try the baking soda method. It’s cheap and safe for wool.

Sprinkle a generous amount of baking soda over the entire rug (you might need a few boxes for a large rug), use a soft broom to push it slightly into the fibers, and let it sit overnight or even for 24 hours if possible. Then vacuum it up thoroughly.

Baking soda is great at absorbing odors without wetting the wool, which can sometimes make the 'wet dog' smell worse if not dried properly.
