As the title.. I have a putty knife with caked on layers of easyfill, I've had a go scraping the stuff off with a scraper but it's like rock, I don't want to use a chisel and hack at it as this will rip through the protective layers on the tool. Would leaving it in a bucket over night work? I'd prefer to avoid harsh chemicals and go for the natural methods.

I would stick it in a bucket of hot water with some soap powder/liquid overnight.

I would buy a new putty knife and look after it..

As above.

But just saying: professionals in the taping or plastering game wash all tools as they go along - its a must.

I'll try the bucket method overnight with some fairy in it, see if it softens up enough to pick off. I admit to having done worked prior without the proper passion.

Just use sandpaper like everyone else.

protective layer.
if you were that concerned it wouldnt be caked in crud.

give it a smack with a hammer.
