My bathroom sink has one of these god forsaken things. Yesterday it stuck in the down position and refused to move. I finally got it back up using a sucker. I've unscrewed the head and squirted wd40 down the side of the mechanism, and it seems to be moving ok,but as it's started doing this, does it need replacing??. If so how easy are they to do. It looks like there is a metal collar underneath the sink, screwed up to meet the sink, but what seals the sink side??.
Thanks

rubber washer on sink side -usually a sort of tapered thing that sits nicely in the porcelain sink

if you replace the waste, Id be tempted to replace the trap at the same time

check what sort of waste you need -some are slotted for the overflow some arent
