Please can somebody advise me. I am not a plumber but an electrician that drilled through some a cable that connects the Drayton thermostat to an Ideal Slimline SE15 FF with a 25Epcb.Blew fuse in boiler FCU.Repaired wires and now boiler water fires up ok when water only selected. When I select heating the boiler fires up and clicks loudly in the boiler (think it is gas valve)and on the thermostat. Tried new thermostat and same fault. Tried new Drayton 241 programmer and same problem. I now think the control PCB faulty. Can anyone please advise. Thanks in advance.

My first reaction is why didn't you use a volt stick to check for cables before drilling?

I thought that all electricians would have done that!

Of course my usual advice would be to get a competent boiler engineer but then I am aware that many are very weak on the electronics side.

It would surprise me if the boiler PCB has really failed but without a curcuit diagram of the installation I cannot advise you from afar of the likely cause.

Can you trace the circuit and post it up?

Tony

Strange how it works for HW without clicking, but not for heating.

The boiler its self doesn't know whether it is being asked for either, just a switched live supplying power from the zone valve(s).

Depending how loud the clicking is, it could be a flame rectification fault, which could be the pilot too small, a faulty ignition lead, or the pcb.

I have had many of these pcb's blow through various reasons.

You could drop the panel under the boiler and see if the sparking is continuing after the boiler is lit for starters, by looking at the pcb, but unfortunately this may turn out to be one of those faults that you have to be in front of to diagnose properly.

Tony\Dave,
Thanks for replying to my help plea.
I think you are correct about getting an engineer out with me.It appears that these PCB's are quite unreliable according to local plumb merchants so I will go down that route as it is the last thing on my list. Will try to trace circuit and post it if possible.
Volt sticks are not used to trace cables in walls but cable tracers are and on this occasion it let me down badly. This is only a couple of years old this house and whoever wired the system piggy backed these 3 cables to each other then covered it in spot and dab so rendering the detector useless,
Thanks again for your comments and will keep you informed.
