I suppose nothing wrong putting a box next to the consumer unit with some DIN rail and some RCBO's fed from say a 60A MCB. However may as well fit new consumer unit!!!!!!

As you say, I suppose 'nothing wrong' - but, as has been said, it's possible that the existing MCB for the circuit in question could be changed to an RCBO.
