I want to replace my gas fire which is built into the old coal fire place with a coal fire again. Is it easy to do and or expensive? My current fire has a marble hearth and floor.
Any advice or tips would be appreciated

Installing a solid fuel fire, stove or woodburner is notifiable building work unless you use a registered HETAS installer who will test & certify the installation as compliant. If the flue is already lined with a gas flue liner, it won’t be suitable for use with solid fuel & will have to be removed/replaced. A new fire back will need to be installed & the flue must be properly inspected & tested to establish if it’s sound or needs lining. Both the decorative marble hearth you can see & the constructional hearth that should be underneath must meet latest regulations & unless the marble hearth is constructed in sections, it most probably wont be suitable for the heat a solid fuel fire generates & will crack.
