I still dont understand how a "plumber friend" can fiddle about and end up making it worse and then be totally unable to sort it out!

This is the most basic type of problem and any half competent plumber should be able to manage it.

Perhaps the "problem" is that the OP expected him to come out free and he is acting in a bolshi way because he does not want to do free jobs?

I never do any free jobs and all my friends are clearly told that they will have to pay our standard charges. They then get a proper professional service.

ok but you say your boiler is overheating on hw / heating .

If i have the HW and CH on, i can get CH but the HW dont heat up. If i have HW on then the whole boiler goes off including all the lights.

sounds like your valve is seized up.
