Help! We have an old oil fire boiler central heating system (Worcester Danes moor) which is regularly serviced and has just been serviced again. The problem is the radiators and connecting pipes which, incidentally, are under a concrete floor. Having lived here for over 20 years we have for the last half of those years, had problems with the radiators not all being hot. Some are, whilst some are cold, some warm. They are removed and flushed out, which some have black sludge in. Sometimes that gets the odd one going but not always. We have had plumbers in but short of wanting to put completely new central heating in, and there are nine rads, they can't help. The system cannot be cleaned out with any central heating chemicals, as it is fed, directly from the main water tank; not having its own separate tank. A new pump was put in last year, which caused a temporary improvement in most of the rads.
Now, all the rads except the one right behind the boiler, which is boiling hot, are cold. My concern is the water is now coming out the hot taps, absolutely boiling hot - I think this is dangerous so have shut the system off and are now using electric fan heaters. Does anyone any knowledge on what the problem is and what can be done? I can't afford thousands of pounds to replace the whole system at this moment in time.

Personally I would be loath to spend good money on a 20 yr old system full of sludge and with pipes buried under concrete. :(

In my area you can have a combi and 7 rads fitted for around £2K. Worth ringing around your local (RECOMMENDED TO YOU ) Corgi 1 man band people who will do you a good job. :D

Thanks for advice and I would agree, except round here, I've been quoted between £5-7K for a new combi system to be installed!

...or put in a separate header tank for central heating. Does domestic hot water (from tap) come from a cylinder - there might be a thermostat on it that can be adjusted or replaced.

If there is sludge blocking up the system, then it needs to be really cleaned out properly with a properly done power flush, otherwise you might just be shifting it around.

Do you have gas there?

Yes, gas has recently been installed in the area. Thanks for advice.
