Does a Combi Boiler need to have a water softer unit (such as an AquaDial) cartridge?

The one in my bungalow needs replacing as the whole unit is fused together but just wondering if it is worth while or not.

The valve that the cartridge fits into, so it can be replaced every year. A whole load of some sort of crystals (green and looks like limescale).
