I know my boiler is about 25 years old and probably not the most economical either but it does the job a treat!

I've had my boiler serviced yearly and recently had a new ignition switch installed however this morning I've noticed that I had no hot water or heating. I have a pilot light and the electrics are all working as when I turn it over to constant it all kicks in lovely however the burners don't ignite.

I've got a chap coming to see it on Tuesday however what are the possible problems? Only asking as I don't have a man about the house and last time got conned something rotten so want to have a little know how before I get told it's something that it's highly likely not to be.

Many Thanks!

Such a simple boiler and if all the external controls are working correctly it could at worst be the operator on the gas valve which can be replaced as a spare. There is a plug at the rear of the thermostat housing that sometimes becomes dislodged, and you could check that it is pushed firmly into its socket.

Thank you for your reply, I've tried that without any luck.

The engineer on the phone has told me it's either the fan or a sensor either way apparently.... pricey to repair....!

When I turn it onto constant I can hear the pump kicking in and all the bits kicking into gear, it's just literally the burner doesn't ignite.

Any other suggestions or is it likely to be what the engineer suggests?

The engineer is at best a plonker as there is no fan or sensors in your boiler.
It is one of the easiest boilers to repair and I would avoid your engineer as he obviously has no experience of older boilers. It amazes me that a diagnosis can be done over the phone, I've never been able to do that!

Yep. find another RGI. But I can identify most faults over the phone (on older systems anyway). Bit I have learnt NEVER to give too much free info over the phone.

But, OP, make sure the button you press for the pilot has come fully forward. They do stick.
