Concrete mixes

Ok, I need to lay a bit of concrete, instead of aggregate I have 1/2" (landscaping) ballast and some bags of building sand. How much sand should I add to the "stones" to make a good basic mix, or is it just a case of "yup the stones look red now" ?
N.B. Light weight base for (yet another) aviary. 5:1 do ?

I would go for 2:1 stone to sand
From 4:2:1 mix (4 aggregate,2 sand,1 cement)
Or 6:1 ballast:cement

Depend on the thickness of the concrete and what it's for?

C 2" over old set slabs to 3" over broken bricks/ slabs/ rubble. Doesn't have to take a lot of weight as I think a macaw only weighs a few pounds and the aviary is made from ally frames !!

Info for others,

Foundations, drives, floor slabs and any other heavy duty
1 part cement, 5 parts all-in aggregate (20mm max)
or
1 part cement, 2.5 parts sand, 4 parts coarse aggregate (20mm max)

For paths and thin section
1 part cement, 3 3/4 all-in aggregate (10mm)
or
1 part cement, 2 parts sand, 3 parts coarse aggregate (10mm max)

For paving les than 50mm and bedding mortar for slabs
1 part cement, 3 parts sand

If he hasnt got a perch he wont weigh anything, but oh boy will his wings be tird.

If "Monty" and "Mrs Monty" don't start doing "what comes naturally" pretty soon, they'll weigh even less 'cos I'll put them on rations !!!
