Is it wrong to connect a a plastic cistern fill valve tube to a tap hose (like this http://www.screwfix.com/app/sfd/cat/pro.jsp?id=18417&ts=96849).

I tried it but but found the connection leaked. I was using the torbeck fill valve from my old cistern and the threads on the plastic were knackered. Did the I knacker it by overtightening, was it knackered before attempting to fit or - is there some plumbers law the says not to connect a metal tap hose to a plastic thread.

If it is OK to connect the tap hose to the plastic, I will just go out and by a replacement with fresh un-knackered threads.

Thanks

Good point. The tap hose I am using has got a green washer in what looks like fibre - definitely not rubber. Can I just replace the washer.

Cheers

Rubber washer would be better and need less force to tighten. Most rubber ones are hand tighten plus a bit more to seal.

Fibre washers are usually ok if everything clean and fittings not cross threaded. You MAY have overtightened it. Take it off and look at the threads. You will soon see if you have stipped them.

If it's a long plastic thread, before you rush out and by another valve, try cutting the end thread off carefully to leave fresh new thread.

Its worth a try ;)

I did this and used the thin rubber stuff, I can't remeber what its called now. It comes on a roll is normally white and stretchy, and is great for sealing gaps and leaks.
