Consumer stuff on the suppliers board

Since this topic isn't only about "Electrics UK", but about a particular criminal act, and whether or not it's OK to commit it, I disagree with your assertion that an etymological discussion is out of scope.

As to whether or not most people have committed a criminal act (like speeding), I agree, but I wouldn't say that we/they are classed as criminals in perpetuity.

For example, if I had set fire to the dry grass on a railway embankment, as a youth, and caused a lot of damage, and 'got into trouble' over it, then without doubt I would have been a criminal. As a more mature adult, if I have a policy of abiding by the law, then I'd maintain that I would no longer be a criminal. Similarly, I'm no longer a child, although I'm sure that I have been one.

Personally, my view of someone who's convicted for a serious offence, and serves a custodial sentence for it, and who shows regret and a change of attitude, is that their criminality is effectively rescinded.

Equally, my view of someone who demonstrates that they don't care whether or not something they plan to do is illegal, only about whether or not they're likely to get caught and the severity of the penalty, is that the personal is of criminal intent, until the day that he changes his mind.

I never had any doubt that he could.

Carried away? I'm answering the points that other people have raised. Some of them were raised by the OP himself.

illegal maybe,but hardly serious,
I never considered it to be a serious offence. It seems that you haven't read the posts that you're now criticising. For example, this post, in which I wrote that the OP's intended crime was petty.

No. Nor would I ever expect to.

I see. So is that what grownups do? Trivialise an intention to break the law?

Dunno. But then I'm in the pleasant and relaxed position of not really knowing what it has come to - I had a bit of an exchange with FR, and that's about it from where I sit.

Well.

I was thinking about doing it soonish anyway, but what prompted my Q was that we had a card through the door recently saying that they're going to replace my meter, so I thought maybe I should get a move on as after that bang goes any chance of saying "Fuse seal? Nowt to do with me"

OTOH, if I wait until after they've done it then:

a) They won't be back for many a year.

b) The new meter might have a built-in isolator.

c) I'll be able to see how easily the fuse comes out.

I did toy with the idea of mounting the switch and leaving the outgoing tails prepared and just asking the buy who comes to put his meter tails into my switch instead of my henley block - no extra work for him...

Never seen a main fuse pulled? I suggest you leave it to the professionals otherwise you might harm yourself...

On second thoughts..... :D

What if there was a serious fault in say the main switch in the consumer unit and the service fuse did not blow, would it then be permissable to cut the seal and pull the fuse?

Best thing I ever saw was where the DNO put seals on MY henley blocks (well, the customers, but I installed them!) although, saying that, it releives the curiosity to get and un-insulated screwdriver out of the drawer...

As Roo has pointed out, that's one of the reasons they don't like people mounting stuff on their board. The space is allocated for their kit, whatever that might be now or at some time in the future.

Personally, I would only mount stuff on the board as a last resort....

My meter was recently changed for a new electronic type. At the same time I requested that an isolator be supplied and fitted which they did without charge. The isolator was fitted by the DNO to their piece of wood and was sealed at the isolator on their side of the supply.
