Hi all ...i'm a newbie to this site .. and was wondering if someone could give me a small tip ...
I have just wired my 2 12v bathroom lights with the transformer and the extractor fan .. all works well when i connect it all up using a plug but when i conect it to the consumer unit the rcd always resets ....HELP

Thanks Adam for the reply .... at the moment i am running it off the plug with only a 3amp fuse... will that be ok until i take another look 2morrow ..
When you say neutral earth reversal does that actual mean i have an earth and neutral crossed .... sorry if i sound a little thick but i have installed a few lights but never encountered this ... thanks again

Richi, are you sure you have the neutral wire in the correct side of the RCD. If the live is on the RCD protected side then the neutral must be on the RCD neutral output side and not the input.

Hi BJS-Spark ... sorry for delayed responce had a hard days work .. I started another subject by mistake basically writing what i exactly want to do ... The RCD is an MCD .. i have taken the 2 core and earth from my consumer box up to the loft .. fitted a 4 pole junction box where the wires go to the light switch and also both my low voltage lights .. one is a spot and the other is in the grill above my shower which is then ducted to my 240v inline fan.the feed for the fan was taken from that junction box to a dp pull cord then to the fan so i can switch of the fan independently.. Now all this is powered at the moment from the 2 core and earth tail by the consumer unit with a normal plug with only a 3amp fuse .. i just wanted to test the whole thing and all seems fine BUT ....Inside the consumer box i have one spare MCD a 6Amp which i was going to connect up " all pwr off from the mains ". I connected the live to the top of the MCB the Blue to the Neutral bar and earth to the Earth bar ... BUT when i switch the pwr back on the RCCD on the otherside of the consumer unit flicks off not the actual MCB that i wired the tails into ?????

My guess is you're connecting into the wrong neutral bar, it sounds like you have a split load CU which has two neutral bars, if you are connecting to the non rcd side of the CU you need to use the non rcd neutral bar.

Hi Spark 123 ...... thanks for the reply .. i do appreciate people who make time to help invalids like moi and you are absolutely right .. i have N1 N2 and N3 ... i thought these bars are all connected to one another .. i think i used N3 .. how do i know which is the correct bar ?

Can you post a photo of the inside of the CU? Have you tried N1?

Just a big thanks Spark123 and the other electro dudes for there replies ...

Once i connected the neutral to N1 .. all worked fine .....

At the end of next week our Sparke will be round to check the job over to get my completion cert ... but it has got me out of a tight spot until he comes !!! Electrics is one thing ... but consumer boxes " me dont like !!!!"
