Converting garage to a play/computer room*materials to use?

Hi

We are planning to convert our garage into a play/computer room for the family, we understand that we will have to apply for building regulations. To replace the garage doors we are opting for french double glazed doors instead of a a wall and window as the garage and front door are our only access through to the back of the house.
We are planning to do all the work our selves apart from install the french doors, we are pretty good diy-ers, not beginners.

I have some questions and was hoping that someone can help with some answers!

1. When we pay our fee for building regulations, do they send someone out to tell us what is required and what materials we should be using?

2. Until the above happens, what type of insulation should we use between the beams of the flat roof for the best results?

3. The garage was built with a damproof into the walls and floor, will the french doors need to be fitted onto a row of housebricks or can they be fitted straight onto the floor?

4. Is there any work we can carry out safely before applying for building regulations or does everything have to be inspected?

Any other recommendations would be extremely appriciated..

When you pay your building control fee, the building inspector will come round as many as time you want them to within reason. Before you start make appointment with the building inspector first.

2. Until the above happens, what type of insulation should we use between the beams of the flat roof for the best results?

They are many ways of doing this, so let the building inspector make a recommendation, this way you won't get any hassles !

3. The garage was built with a damproof into the walls and floor, will the french doors need to be fitted onto a row of housebricks or can they be fitted straight onto the floor?

Normally a minimum of 2 row of brick,the dpc minimum 150mm from the ground and overlap into exsisting garage dpc.

4. Is there any work we can carry out safely before applying for building regulations or does everything have to be inspected?

You can do a rough drawing and take it to the building control department and they will advise you what to do. In my area you don't have to make a appointment, just turn up but check for in your area.
