Eager diyer here and just to let you know so far I have had to pull down some brick work due to bad ivy destroying the mortar. No I did not realise that the mortar was lime based but have since found out that most properties of this age have at least some lime mortar left. My question is really how can I safely work with it myself as I do not have the money for people to come in and do it.

Use gloves and dont get the dust in your eyes/lungs. Otherwise not a problem.
