Hello folks,
I'm replacing some casement windows in a stone cottage and am unsure about the lime(what type of lime??) / cement mix. The existing cement is whiter than portland so will need to duplicate the colour (give or take), the interior and exterior will need making good with it. (cotswold cottage style) Also, what's the correct procedure for smoothing off, a wet sponge or just a trowel?
thanks in advance!!

Its probably a lime mortar that has no cement content, what age is the cottage?

Its probably easiest to buy a pre mixed mortar

Best wait for the weather to warm up though as it will take an age to set in the winter

Thanks Jason,
Its 400 yrs old but has been extended so the mortar colour varies.. Basically I just want a regular mix but slightly lighter than the normal portland mix..

If you are looking especially to match the colour using a cement/lime/sand mix you could try using white cement, or a mixture of white and OPC. Mix up some different batches using a cup to gauge out the mix and leave them for a few weeks. Use the closest match. A weak
1/3/12 mix can be used if you are using non hydraulic lime. If using a strong hydraaulic lime you won't need cement.
