The rear brakes are normally self adjusting, and the holes in the backplate are only there to allow you to see how much lining material remains.
If you're not happy with the self adjusters, they can be operated manually, but only with the drums off. Occasionally its possible to access the adjuster through one of the stud holes in the drum.
