Hi

We have a 2001 X reg Corsa 1.0 Comfort.

Over the past year or so, it has been gradually losing power and 'oomph' uphills and pulling away, even with foot full down on gas. Last week it fully gave up, and we couldnt get it started (and nor could the RAC)

We called out a mobile mechanic who lives in the same street as us. He told us the engine had gone and needed to stripped down and rebuilt. This would cost £700, and we agreed.

He then came to us to say that he had done this, but the thing that was causing the damage to the engine was the ECU (engine control unit). If we didnt have it replaced, it would just cause the same problems again, and we would need to have the engine rebuilt again.

The ECU can only be a new one, as the reconditioned one was rejected. A new one costs £700, plus £85 to be programmed in.

Altogether we are being charged £1485.

Is this reasonable, or have we been ripped off?

And should the engine now be perfect?

Thanks.

Sounds like you're being taken for a ride, but hard to say without seeing the car.

Get a second or third opinion, and dont mention any work that has been done or ECU problems, see what they say!

sadly it looks as if you have been taken for a ride by someone who doesnt have a clue,a main dealer may be your only hope now so they can run their diagnostics on it
