Hello,

I'm currently redoing my bathroom and im about to fit some replacement gypsum plaster coving and I've patch filled various areas on the walls to try and get a nice finish when I paint the walls.

What should I use to prime the coving? And should I prime the walls first to reduce the chances of the filler flashing through the final colour? I've got a tin of Gardz I can use. Should I use Gardz on the coving then give it a primer of Zinnser 123? Would Zinnser 123 also be a good primer for the walls?

I've then got some Zinnser Bathroom Anti Mould paint for the coving and ceiling.

Many Thanks.

Gardz is good to prime coving as it seals the plasterboard paper and filler. I used many times on coving...

Walls is more complicated in that its not always a good Idea to spot prime fillers.
Sometimes you can but sometimes not. Depends what's on the walls, as you don't want well sealed filled areas sealed, with the rest of the wall having old emulsion that has a higher suction. This causes a difference in drying and tension in the wet paint.
Sometimes its better to seal the entire wall so that the emulsion dries evenly.

Gardz is a really good sealer but clear.

123 is white and not as good as sealing as Gardz. It's more a primer with good covering.
It's also thicker so can even out a surface.
