As you might guess, I have an obsessive interest in how things work.
That continues into an interest in why they fail. I like to identify the individual component when possible on PCBs and the reasons for other boiler parts.
When I was 10 years old we had a class exercise where we asked a question for another kid to answer. ( That was before internet and needed real library looking in BOOKS to find answers. Those were the days! ).
My class question was how does a gas meter work! Little did I know that after 30 years in the electronics industry I would ever be actually working with gas. Of course just a coincidence but it shows how I was intreagued by that box under the stairs.

Hey Tony, does that mean when you were 10 you went home and took apart your gas meter under the stairs? I guess your parents were pleased.

When I was 6, the neighbour was on holiday and dad went to check the back of their house.
They had a concrete sundial. Now I knew that it told the time but did not know how it worked. So I tried to turn it over to see the works inside but it wss too heavy and it fell over and broke in two. I was spanked and he tried to repair it with cement!
As I had learnt that there were no works inside, I felt a little stupid when dad explained what I was doing with it.
But you do have to start somewhere!
