I am currently putting up new wall units in my kitchen and a hairline crack has started to appear horizontally along the screw line of three of the wall fixings. This is about 20" long at the moment and it definitely opens up as the screws are put in. The walls are plaster over thermal block. Is this going to cause a problem and if so what can I do? How can I prevent this crack extending further?

Forgot to mention something above. The crack is running from one corner of the kitchen but hasn't affected the adjoining wall.

if a spread over does it when polishing up the skimming, it can put a certain amount of tension within the skim. this can lead to hairline cracks developing as you describe.
