Afternoon all,

I think I know the answer to this, but I would appreciate your views anyway (even if it is only to tell me that I have p****ed a whole load of money down the drain :( )

I had the reception rooms in my 1930s house skimmed and painted in September/October last year. The underlying plaster was late 70s (well there was a large '1978' on one of the walls!), but parts of it were the original lathe. It wasn't in the greatest of nick, some blown patches, but as I have a young daughter and am not exactly awash with cash after having just moved couldn't face taking the walls back to brick. I also had the artex ceilings smoothed.

About a month after it was painted (which was itself over a month after the skimming was done) I noticed large cracks had appeared in several of the walls - although funnily enough, some are untouched. The cracks are only hairline but run for several feet horizontal and vertical, and both ceilings have cracks that run the length of the rooms. They all seemed to appear at once when the temperature dropped in November, although I think some have deteriorated since.

Naturally I'm gutted but assume this is the risk you take with skimming over dodgy plaster. Is there anything I can do now (e.g. fill and repaint) to manage the damage in the short term? And should my plasterer/decorator have known better? From what I can remember he did apply PVA to the walls and start painting with a mist coat.

Thanks, and roll on the abuse

If the old plaster has moved underneath, then that could cause your problems. The best scenario is to get rid of it all etc, but as you said if you havnt got the money, then you've done the best.

Go to b n q, get a bag of easi fill, it will last you forever, and it will sand down perfect.
