About to lay new driveway, been offered crushed tarmac as a base for my driveway cheap, going to lay gravel over top.

Is this ok? Or should i stick to MOT type1 or Scalpings and wacker the usual way?

Any thoughts appreciated, driveway cars only really no heavy loading.

About 30 years ago when I was working up in Milton Keynes they were resurfacing the M1 and everyone was using the old tarmac scrapings in their oversites.

I did a bit of research and asked around and just could not find a reason not to use it. It is fine for loadbearing, it compacts down really well. I was a bit concerned about the bitumen reacting with the polythene DPM or giving off noxious vapours but all to no avail. Building Control were happy with its use.

If 30 ton lorries can trundle up and down the M1 on it I cant see why you cannot use it as hardcore fill.

Mind you I haven't been back to Milton Keynes since so for all I know they've had a lot of floor slab failures.

You'll be fine for a driveway- wouldn't even worry about the gravel on top if you can whack the planings every 150mm depth. Had 16 ton of the stuff in an ex piece of wilderness about 6 months ago- it sits flat and drains well.
