My drive is 105 sqm I've had quotes for block paving of around £4500 and Tarmac of around £4200. They seem really expensive, I've had a few quotes as well. I'm based in Birmingham. Am I out of touch? I was hoping tarmac would be a cheap option as the guy said he would just peel back the top of the existing tarmac driveway as it's been down for years.

Only other option I can think of is slate or gravel - would this be much cheaper?

Any advice appreciated

Go for brush finished concrete. 35 newton. An everlasting job when laid correctly.
Did my drive 15 years ago with a power screed and an extremely tight slump and its still in the same condition today.
Even the harsh frost couldn't shift it.
Shouldn't cost you any more than £2k.

the price for block paving is not unreasonable however the tarmac should be considerably (closer to 2500 ) cheaper.
