Upset by night sweats, almost laughable (7).

sounds like night

Sweat is another synonym.

Then an anagram of both.

Homophone of night - 'knight', that's 6 letters.
A 1 letter synonym for sweat ??
Almost laughable - joking (6) is as close to an anagram of knight as I can get.

I'm still at a loss.

Almost laughable is the complete clue for the word.

Knight also has three letters.

And a synonym for sweat.

You mean an abbreviation of knight has 3 letters?
There are several abbreviations for knight.

When I started the thread, it was with an idea for amusement, i.e. solvable clues, not as a competition as to who could make the most obscure clues.
Requiring a homophone of a word, when none was indicated, then an abbreviation (of which there are several) of that homophone, added to another synonym for another noun to form an anagram, is reaching the extremity of obscurity.

@Justin Passing
All abbreviations of knight must have either a 'K' or an 'N'.

4 letter synonym for sweat:
Horses sweat, men perspire, and ladies gently glow.

glow + kni (or Knt, Ngt, or KCB)

"knowing" = 2 'n's and no 'l'.

Knight = Sir in blupspeak? Ok from knight I'd say, but a stretch too far from night.

sweat could lead to glow, bead, damp, flap, cold

I have no link to the "ible" added to sir in risible.
Clues could be letters & positions of course.

Looking at Guardian crosswords is interesting. They give the answers of old ones. Often the Q's and A's tie up with standard methods but I can't work them all out.
Authors do have their own quirks. There wouldn't be much point setting Times level clues here, I don't think we could do well...

It’s an anagram of risible : sir + bile. Plenty of cryptic clues require a two stage approach. Whether, or when, a cryptic clue becomes an obscure one is a matter of judgement.

I'm happy with two stage approach, but a multiple and mixed up staged approach is bordering on obscure, for me.
An anagram of a synonym of a homophone + an anagram of another obscure synonym (is 'bile' an acceptable synonym of 'sweat'?) gives an anagram of the result?

That's too obscure for me.

Can we have some solvable clues. That's a bit of fun. Obscure, impenetrable clues are not.
It's not a competition. It's a bit of fun.

This one uses a bit of unusual methods, but I don't think it's too obscure:
One footway why ? , can’t be bothered ? (6)

Not sure if anyone is still interested, or whether it became a little too acrimonious
but a little help:
One footway (5) + Why (1) = can't be bothered (6)

No , I got it, was away, didn't have a witty riposte and was a bit apathetic.
