cutting back a portion of a chimney support shelf

we have a diagonal concrete slab above a now redundant corner fireplace. it sits 49" off ground, the chimney above measures 14"x 14", the slab 35" either side, can we cut a small part of this back without worrying about the chimney. it will still be tied in in all the relevant places.
