Is there an electric tool that will cut the centre from a ceramic tile (eg. so that it is left looking like a 'U' shape) or do I need to use a hand saw?

Cut the two legs of the "U" with an electric tile cutter and the bottom of the "U" with a manual one, assuming you want all three parts with straight edges. If you want the bottom curved then a handheld tilesaw, tile blade in a jigsaw or Diamond coated holesaw in combination with an electric cutter.

Thanks, a tile blade in a jigsaw sounds good. They don't seem to have them in screwfix - are they easy to come by?

look at the grit edged jiggy blades from SF.

They will only work on ceramic, make sure your tiles are not porcelain.

Rota-zip or dremmel with tile cutting attatchment will also work on ceramic.

Do as our jase says .....I used to use a great Hitachi tile cutter , like a mini angle grinder ... Boss tools ..:)
