Is it advisable for a DIYer to change a cylinder stat - is there anything particular I need to know? Do I have to drain the system? Any help much appreciated

5 min job
you don't need to drain.
just change one wire at a time you can't go wrong.

just make sure you isolated the power supply.

Well you could go wrong! Sometimes the terminal numbers are different, if you get a different make.

Is it possible that you're thinking of an immersion heater thermostat?

If so, then you still don't have to drain anything, and it's even easier than a cylinder stat.

Isolate first.

If it's an off-peak immersion heater, don't assume that it can't energise while you're working on it.

Thanks for comments- the reason I ask about draining the cylinder is the stat looks unlike the ones on eg screwfix website - it has two wires coming out the end, seems to be moveable in and out and of a hole in the cylinder witha nut on the end - I think it is a combimation cylinder - we have no cold water or F+E cistern

Maybe the thing you're looking at is the immersion heater element - it screws into a large boss in the cylinder.

Here's one:

You have to drain the cylinder to replace the above component.

The thermostat is a component that works in conjunction with the element, and looks like this:

It doesn't matter. Either you have an immersion heater or you don't. If you have a combination cylinder then it just means that you can't have a top-mounted IH.

One remote possibility is that you have one of those weird low voltage elements. Does it look like this:

I doubt that is took me much longer to post that that it did for you to read it.

Thanks for further replies - it is definitely not an immersion stat - Ive taken 2 pictures but im not sure hoe to attach them to the message!

it looks to me like a dry component, not a wet one.

Is that a screw in the side of the big nut?

I so, does removal of that screw allow withdrawal of the thermostat/thermocouple?

Yes, undo the screw and the thermostat phial will pull out. By the way, why do you think it is faulty?
