Dear All, I'm looking for information about the Daihatsu Materia 1.5 petrol car.
So far I've established that the engine is a Toyota, but I am interested in exchanging the gearbox for one with a differential that enables cruising at lower rpm. At present it does about 20mph/1000rpm in 5th gear, and I want it to do 23 or 24 mph/1000rpm. My questions are

1. Where is a good place to find info about the Materia? - it appears the Daihatsu Drivers club website is defunct.
2. Which Toyota models share the same pattern gearbox? Armed with this info it is simply a matter of getting the relevant Haynes Manual to find out which 'box is the most suitable.

Regards, MM

This is a hugely difficult one......
All gearboxes have a designation code - often three letters such as 2NZ, 4ZZ or whatever. Therefore you'll need to see which gearbox is fitted to the Materia and then cross reference other Toyota installations to see where it pops up again......if indeed it does. Maybe a firm specialising in Jap imports would be a good start?
I don't think you'll find what you want from Haynes, in any case.
Problems with fitting a gearbox into a different vehicle include differing gear linkages, mountings and so on.
Maybe larger diameter wheels / tyres could be the way to go - but of course the speedo would then need recalibration.

Thanks John. I'm certainly not looking to make a project out of changing the gearbox, but have to make it better as the g/f is threatening to buy a Skoda Yeti, and I'm not having one of those things on the drive!
Perhaps a better question would be 'what's the best website for Daihatsu drivers?'

As the owner of a Yeti, I have to conclude that your g/f is a person of impeccable choice and style :LOL:
I still think you have one hell of a task ahead, and wondering if anyone has ever grafted an overdrive onto a Toyota box- but you'd need a different propshaft just for a kick off.
I don't think your car is particularly under driven though.....the hill climbing and accelleration would be seriously compromised if you over did things.
Let's know how you get on!
Regards
John :)

I saw a top of the range 4x4 Yeti and it was seriously smart.

Mine is the Outdoor 4x4 so it rides high.....2.0 diesel, 150 brake - I like it!
Now that I can afford a performance car, I really can't be bothered!
John :)

That must do 0 to 60 in about 10 sec, that's fast enough for me.

Speaking as an old geezer, it does me well enough.....6 speed gives me 50 mpg and 1 litre of Adblue per 1k miles - assuming the tank was full when I bought it new.
It's 4x4 which I hope will do me well enough when the snow comes.
John :)
