Hi people,
Recently moved into a 1930's house and have stripped out some built in shelving in an alcove to find the bottom corner against the chimney breast is completely damp through, from the floor upto about 2ft high and covering the whole side and a bit on the front of the breasting.
The chimney is on an internal wall and all the fireplaces have been boarded and vented. I have now opened up the downstairs one.
I intend to leave the brickwork exposed and possibly painted on the breasting and alcove.
Should I be overly concerned about the damp as I know chimneys are notorious for damp ??
Or should I be very worried and get in a professional to get it sorted ?
I am quite capable at DIY, so any suggestions welcomed.
