Thanks guys for the help, update on progress.
Neighbours were very helpful and didn't have an issue with me cutting the concrete back, so this is what it looks like now. Need to dig a bit deeper so it's two bricks below DPC and a bit of repointing. Next step is to line with a geotextile fabric to stop it silting up before adding shingle. Hopefully should cure the issue.
