Four plants were badly wilted so I dug them up to put them in tubs of grow bag to try and bring them back to life.

When I lifted there was very little root which had gone brown and what looks like little bits of white rice stuck to the root which easily rubbed off.

Obviously an infection which I hope will not spread to the other sprout plants.

Anyone know what the infection might be ?

Does sound like cabbage root fly. You can help next year by putting a cabbage collar around the base of the plant as you plant it out, something like this: https://www.amazon.co.uk/gp/product/B00K3H616M/ref=oh_aui_detailpage_o03_s00?ie=UTF8&psc=1
Or some folk make their own out of cardboard.
The idea is to create a barrier so they cannot lay their eggs at the root of the plant. It's not 100% but everything helps, as does crop rotation, don't plant them in the same site for 3 years because they can lay dormant in the soil over winter.
