Decorating a furnished house

Hi,

I’ve got my house done by someone that obviously didn’t even know what a decorator is.
It’s full of mistakes and everything simply sucks, the weak paint (2 coats), the skirting boards dirty by leaking paint or hands that couldn’t stay quite, you name it…

So, now it’s time to fix it all, and I’d like to add a few things too:
1. Decorating the edges, so paintwork between the skirting boards and paint, or just do caulking where possible.

2. Cornices, I have none at the moment

3. Paint the skirting boards on the stairs

4. The grout on the floor is horrible, either it’s already dusty, not levelled, or simply the concrete resurfaced in some areas.

5. Paint/Correct the edges of the windows, as well as the table top (full paint)
Silicon needs to be reapplied in some areas

How much would it cost? Please divide labour and material.

On top of the dedorator job, I’m also looking to do other upgrades, so I don’t have an unlimited budget, but I’m willing to pay around 2-3k to make it up to standards like any other well decorated house, the only thing is that is partially furnished and I’ll need to move them, this will waste some time, otherwise I could do only the visible parts, but as the paint and caulking are involved, it’s a crime I don’t want to commit .
It’s a 4 beds, I may skip one bedroom, or better to say storage…

I’ve been left with nothing in hand by another famous company, with tons of positive feedbacks, though this was for another job.
Probably they didn’t like sourcing the materials, but it was one of the things they were supposed to do… I didn’t even complain about the price tag.
Then, after the purchase, I struggled to find someone…

In general, I think that everyone is trying to make as much money as they can and nothing else matters, so at least for this decorator kind of job I wanted to be ready before the quote, buy the paint they need, caulking, cornices etc and they they can start working without complications.

You realise that this site, DIYnot, is a play on

"Why not do it yourself?"

and not a millennial

"Do it yourself... Not!"

In other words, its main aim is to help those who want to do it themselves, rather than those who definitely don't

Thanks but I didn’t find other forums for that, plus, I already have a job, the last thing I need is to start another job in my little free time, I don’t know if you realise how important it is.

I think that in this forum I can talk also about trades etc, not only DIY.

Sure but your requirements are pretty vague and you will only get wild guesses unless any of the pro's on here care to work out a price, which they won't and can't because they don't know what to quote for. So £2-5K, maybe, and then you expect someone to breakdown their quote for you too.

A large bedroom in a Victorian house in London, tall (semi battered) skirtings, cornice, door, window, high ceilings, walls. Materials- coloured emulsion, white emulsion, undercoat and oil based eggshell- all in I charge about a grand.

Based on the information you have provided, it is impossible to advise further.

Thanks, in my case is much less, it’s without doors, walls and ceilings, not even the skirting board needs painting, just some correction, but all the rest you mentioned + caulking on the edges and some moulding, not too fancy. The cornice doesn’t need painting, just installation.
Overall I think that 250 per day is possible, excluding materials, I’m in North West.

The only way to get a true figure is to get local quotes from local trades. Many things effect cost not least, the availability / willingness of contractors to do the work. Speak to your neighbours and friends in the area as to who they have used and are happy with. You can try asking your local FB groups but again, be sure to only get those who have experience of using the company. Most of the time though it'll just be themselves or their mate / wife recommending them to try and draw in work ie no recommendations. Get three in; suss them out; assess their professionalism; feel their vibe with yourself and then go with your gut. This won't likely be the cheapest. Whatever happens, at least you'll know that you did your best in getting the best for you.

If you need to find a tradesperson to get your job done, please try our local search below, or if you are doing it yourself you can find suppliers local to you.

Select the supplier or trade you require, enter your location to begin your search.
