Hi,

I have a 7.5 metre long gap directly above the upper rendering line and a uPVC soffit that replaced a wooden soffit. The gap varies in height between 8mm and 17mm along the 7.5 metre length. I want to get the gap filled, preferable with a mortar/pointing mixture so that I can paint it with masonry paint.

How deep does the gap need to be to accept some mortar so that the mortar will not fall out after a few years? I have tried reading up on this and some sites say the infill depth should be a minimum of 10mm and others that it should be deeper. The depth of the infill gap is around 10mm but varies slightly due to the varying thickness of the render applied to the brickwork.
