I only pulled a 3 core & earth cable to the location of digital room stat. I've come to wire it up and now realise the device will only work when programmer is sending a live to it.

Should have been 4 core & earth, right?

That's the conventional way of wiring a thermostat: the stat receiving power, only when the programmer has activated the C/H.
What you do next depends on the new stat.
If the digital stat includes time scheduling, or is smart etc, simply set the programmer to constantly on.
Alternatively, change to a four core and earth cable, or use a stat that has battery power, or backup.
