I'm fitting two new light fittings which take 5 bulbs each, when buying them i told the bloke in the shop they were going through a dimmer switch,is it safe to have two lights each with 5 bulbs rated at either 40W or 60W???!! He seemed to think so!!.......

I'm not an electrician.

On the back of the dimmer switch,it should tell you the maximum watts rating for the total bulbs wattage

masona is right, you should not exceed the maximum for any given dimmer sitch (they bur out if you do)

you should get a dimmer switch that is rated at 600watts or more (just in case some one puts in a 60 watt lamp by accident)
