Thanks to Burnerman (John) for taking the time to reply. By your post I think you were advising me to use self levelling compound. You mentioned PVA glue I know this is going to sound like a stupid question to any experts reading this but you mentioned using PVA glue to help the new cement bond to the old cement. My question can I use the PVA glue that you can buy in shops for children's artwork? I know this sounds really stupid but I am an amateur here.

Certainly I think that a self levelling compound is the way to go - you can buy it by the bag from the larger DIY outlets, and just follow the mixing instructions on the bag.
Regarding the PVA additive, I really can't comment on the classroom stuff - I just use the woodworking type and mix it with water to a solution or brush on neat if its a small area. Its not vital at all, but it can help if the screeds are particularly thin. As your screed is below a laminate anyway its not going to be subjected to foot traffic directly.
Arm yourself with a rectangular float (plasterers tool) that helps you spread the mix and maybe a wooden straightedge that will help you scrape the excess off, and get stuck in.....if you enjoyed laying the laminate floor this is the easy bit!

Thanks again John. I don't know about enjoying laying the laminate floor - I certainly would not recommentd the B & Q Toughloc flooring. It chips very easily and is not as easy to lay (well not to a novice like me). That it why I am so desperate to get the concrete right as we have areas
which are very bouncy, creaking etc. I will have a go at anything so will "have a go at this"! Thanks again for your advice - very much appreciated. It is so hard to do something if you haven't a clue where to start, what to use etc but you have given me enough info to try. Thanks Kath

You are most welcome, and if you can arm yourself with a piece of timber (or longish spirit level maybe) and place it on the concrete floor you'll see where the hollows are quite clearly.
Don't overdo the new screed - well awkward to remove it again!
