Diplomat Select single conventional oven help!

Hi,

I have the most basic diplomat select oven, it has just the one knob, temperature of oven and grill function, no fan...
Last night I noticed that the grill elements are actually heating up when the oven is on at any temperature. I can't imagine this is right?
Does anyone know anything about this or know if that's how the oven is supposed to work?

A conventional oven normally uses the grill elements plus a further element under the base of the floor.

Thanks for your answer...!
So how does that work for things like baking cakes, the bare element is burning red and things are getting burnt on the top...is this really just how its supposed to be?

Perhaps you can answer my query. I have a Diplomat single control cooker
but it no longer has the markings. Please can you tell me what they are.
