I've been asked to rewire a barn. It's a big b****r; about 80' x 40' with a height of around 25' to the apex and I'd need to get up there to install high bay lighting.

I'm inclined to turn down the job - the main reason being the danger involved in working at height, handling a lot of heavy SWA cable... and I'm sure working alone up there would be against all health and safety regulations. Any comments/advice?

(I think I just talked myself out of it!)

good advice.

There are various methods of getting you to the apex, tower, "cherry picker" to name but two. trouble is who is going to hold the cable?

regarding health and saftey there should be two of you as what if you fall, get in trouble?

you obviously do not have the experiance or just not comfortable with it, money although nice is not every thing, pass on this one.

Cheers breezer. I haven't got a licence to drive a cherry picker, so I'd have to pay for a driver as well. And the idea of hoisting all that cable up a tower was my main concern, but I've been chatting to my builder brother and he's happy to come on board for the job.

And he runs a Transit, so there's a means of carrying all the kit - I don't think my old Escort would be up to it!

Why don't you sub the job out and make a few quid on it without the risk ?

Ta for the replies. Breezer's right that I lack the experience of this kind of job, but on the other hand, how does one acquire the experience? On my own, there's no chance I could do this, but with my very experienced brother in tow there should be no problem. Sometimes you just have to grasp that nettle. I'm happy that my electrical calculations are correct and that I can turn a worthwhile profit... all I have to do now is convert that theory into practice!

for what its worth, i learnt by helping some one who had done it before. as an aprentice you soon get used to heights, though i shuder to think of some of the things i used to do, and wouldn't even think of it now.

good luck
