Can someone explain the part in the top of frame - the clear plastic part that looks filled with yellowish fluid (?) - it connects to the salt compartment accessible from the interior of the machine.

What is in it & should it look like that?

Salt container.
Leave it alone.. According to Google search.
Do you have instructions for your make and model.
Try googling for user guide it may give a better explanation.

Thats the water softener unit. Water flows through the brown crystals to soften the water as it fills. During the cycle salt is fed back in to the crystals to regenerate them. If you are using all in one cleaners and not putting salt in the water softener it pretty much becomes redundant.Personally I put salt and rinse aid in even though I am using all in one sachets, but set them to minimum.

Ok, Thanks. - It's not my machine but was just trying to sort a fault and was checking the pumps for blockages. - Wasn't sure if the the yellow stuff was some sort of stuck water/matter as the colour looked a bit fetid.
