Hi.

I have recently moved into a house with a back boiler and hot water tank, The house also has radiators for heating, Now for some reason all the upstairs rad's are on when the hot water tank is heating up even if the rads are turned off.

Is this normal? if not any idea why it's happening and how to stop it?

Thanks

Sounds like an anti gravity valve is stuck, this stops unwanted circulation of your heating system.

Cool, Do you know where about this would likely to be and what it would look like?

they don't all have an antigravity valve.

Maybe you have a 3-way valve or similar

something like that. It is electrically operated, and should shut off the hot supply to the rads or cylinder when not required.

If you have one it will probably be near the central heating pump which may be by the boiler or the hot water cylinder. Feel how many of the pipes connected to it are hot.

Maybe it has neither of the above and thats just the way the system is (particually if its an old system)

As Harrogate says a lot of the older systems didn't have one installed. If you have one then it is usually near to the pump (above it). Sometimes can be hidden behind the false boxing down the side of the chimney breast.
