Just had a new Baxi Duo-tec Combi 28 HE A boiler fitted by NPower. The hall radiator is the only one that has no thermostat and can't be turned off. We don't normally have this radiator on, but the gas safe installer said it needs to be on all the time the boiler is running to protect the boiler from burn out. I think he said something about the wireless room thermostat, which also has to be in the hall, keeping the boiler ON when all the thermostat controlled rads are OFF. Is he right, or can I turn the hall radiator OFF permanently and switch the heating ON manually as and when needed.

The only danger is that if you can't guarantee there will always be at least one radiator fully open, the pump could occasionally be overloaded and may fail prematurely.

If you can easily remove the thermostatic head from the valve in another room where you always want plenty of heat that would be a good alternative.

You might even consider having a wireless room thermostat in that room.

This rad is acting as a bypass although the boiler should have a built in bypass, would suggest the bath room rad has no TRV fitted.

Hi and thanks for the fast replies.
The bathroom has two rads, both with thermostats so would it be OK to keep one of them permanently ON and close down the hall rad.

Yes. Basically the system needs a 'bypass', a constantly open path for the water to circulate around the system. With TRV's, should they all close off then the pump would be pushing against a very high resistance (as it has nowhere to send the water) and it wont like it. Certain boilers also have a 'pump overrun' whereby the boiler controls the pump and keeps it running after the boiler has stopped firing to dissipate residual heat in the boiler.

Provided one rad is permanently open to provide a flow path for the water then others can be closed down as required. Bear in mind though if the stat is in the hall and that rad is off, you may find the other rooms get hotter than you require as the system wont switch off until the stat is satisfied. (Unless you turn it on/off manually as stated.) Stat can be in any room, doesn't have to be the hallway!
