Hi, I'm just about to lay a patio using sandstone flags. The area is 5m x 4m enclosed on three sides and originally it was a 4" thick concrete slab which I have taken up.
What I need to know is, do I need a sub base as the ground is very solid? Also do I need a sharp sand layer?
I will be laying on a 50mm mortar base anyway and it will only be walked on.
Oh, also at the moment it has a weed fabric on it. Can I lay the mortar bed straight onto that?

Remove the fabric and any lose material. Do not put down any layers of sand.

Either use a compacted sub base or lay the bedding mix straight onto the earth.

Sub base is optional but recommended
