I'm extending a patio area and was wondering if I need a layer of subbase before I lay sharp sand. The area will be covered by a pergola so I'm not too worried about drainage. Also, I've noticed that the current slabs are only layed on sharp sand.

Be ok but they will be slabs on sand, so a basic diy job.
