Do I need to use plastic inserts?

Hi,

I am fitting a mixer shower and the connections to the shower back plate are push fit for plastic pipe. Should I use an insert when I connect the pipe to the rear of the back plate as the instructions say the pipe should go between 15mm and 23mm into the back plate. If I use an insert this will reduce the length of pipe sitting within the back plate.

Any help greatly appreciated!
