Hi this could well be a stupid question so forgive me if it is.

my old boiler is in the under the stairs cupboard and it's like a sauna.
Are new condenser boilers cooler running?
I only ask because we want a new one and the best place would be in our larder but if it runs at the same temp as my old boiler all the food will go off.

thanks for your help.

I hope so, or aint much point having one, mind you saying that new ones breakdown so much, its rare theyre ever hot

What type of boiler do you have at present? Combi or heat-only?

Modern boilers do tend to give out less heat to the surrounding area. However, its not just the boiler that emits heat. Don't forget that a combi has flow and return pipes for the heating, as well as the hot water pipe to taps. Combine these with any heat from the boiler, and it will be similar to having a small rad in your larder. Perhaps not an ideal site for a boiler.

When you say you 'want' a new one, do you really mean want or need? Why the change?

Hi whitespirt66

at the moment we have an old floor standing slim ideal mexico 2, it does water and heat with a tank in the loft and cylinder in an upstairs cupboard.

the main reasons I want to change are...
1. its X rated when it comes to efficiency and it needs a to be tickled back into life after each summer break.

2. in my old house we had an on demand combi and I prefer the way they work,it seems more sensible to me to have the water heated only when its needed rather than twice a day just incase.

the ideal mexico unit gets hotter than the rads!
I was hoping a new modern one wouldn't.

thanks for your reply

Hi

As a rule, I wouldn't say to rip out a functioning boiler to save money on gas. The cost of new boiler and converting the system can run into several thousand pounds, which takes a few years to recoup in gas savings. As yours is an old boiler, which is proving troublesome, it may be time to bite the bullet.

A modern condensing combi (my experience is mainly limited to Broag Remeha boilers) will emit a fraction of the heat that your current boiler does. The pipework linked to it probably emits more.

If you have to put it in the larder, can you at least build a cupboard around it and the pipework. Is the larder the only option? Don't forget vertical through the roof flues, if an alternative site doesn't have an outside wall.

If you have several bathrooms, with people using taps, baths or showers at the same time, you may find that a combi can't keep up with demand. So bear this in mind. A good installer will take into account your usage, and incoming water pressure/flow rates.

using lagging on the pipework will limit the amount of heat loss to the surrounding area.

You can alway lag the pipework which would eleiminate the heat transfer from the pipes.

But as the user has said i wouldnt be fitting one in a used larder. The new combis produce ALOT less heat than conventional boilers. Again the more you pay the better quality you recieve. The viessmann vitodens are very good.
