Hi,

I wonder if anyone can cast light on this issue.

I had a plumber in the other day as I want to remove the old potterton boiler and place a new combi boiler upstairs out of the way or in the loft like we did with our old place.

The plumber said the only boiler I could buy was a condensing combi boiler. Is this true?

The boiler we had fitted in our old house was indeed a condensing combi boiler and the condensate was channeled away via a gradient into a stench pipe from the bathroom.

Can a condensing combi boiler not be fitted in the upstairs airing cupboard? Do I need to actaully have a condensing type of boiler?

Just interested in your views.

Kind regards as always

Russell.

yes its true you have to have a condensating boiler, and in most cases a pipe can be run from the upstairs cupboard, but without a plan of the house, its impossible to say,

You could always have a condensate pump fitted under the boiler to pump the condensate away (up & over) if there is no direct way to any waste pipes.

Your first question was "The plumber said the only boiler I could buy was a condensing combi boiler. Is this true? "

The answer is no. You must (apart from a tiny number of possible exceptions) have a condensing boiler. However, this can be a condensing combi boiler or a condensing system / heat only boiler.

If you have a look on the forum / internet generally you'll get a good view of the advantages and disadvantages of the combi and system / heat only boiler options. A system boiler is a heat only boiler with the pump and a few other bits already built in. (Or a combi without the hot water heat exchanger if you like). [/quote]

Yes.
But more importantly, if you need to ask the question, you have the wrong installer as you obviously don't trust him.
