Hi all,

I have a question about the timber rafters in my loft. I purchased my property in 2014. This is an end terrace 1970's brick built. I haven't looked much in my loft as of yet but this morning I decided to go and have a proper look as I'd like to install some loft legs and then place crawl boards over these.

However, my question is around the condition of the timber rafters (sorry if I've got my terminology wrong there). Some of them towards the exterior wall, have a discoloration which I wanted to query on here.

I know a little bit about wet/dry rot but I don't know enough to identify whether this is what I could be dealing with - or whether the markings are from something else. I've attached some pictures for the particular areas. Whilst I was in the loft, all seems to be ok and I can't see any signs of water leaks etc.

Does it look like I might have a problem on my hands? By the way, any white fluffy insulation you may see on top of the loft insulation is cavity wall insulation. I recently had this removed from my property and during the process, some managed to end up in the loft.

Thanks in advance

P.S. The last image is of my insulation. I noticed some orange markings on a small area. Could this be from water? It doesn't look to be much at all and it is of a minimum. However, I thought I'd ask.

They look solid enough, might be condensation check the eaves are clear of insulation, removing the cavity insulation may have helped anyway as there will be some air circulation from the cavity.
The marks look like rust, something rusty left on the insulation for a while. At a push it could be the guy laying it cut himself while doing it.
Just check it again in 6 months or so you have photos my bet is it will be the same, I wouldn't worry too much if it was my loft.

Is the cold water storage cistern still in use ? No lid - condensation from the water in there. It wouldn't hurt to get some Manthorpe felt lap vents and fit them ;)

Looks ok , water marks may have been there since original build , often left exposed to weather before being made watertight .
